It's for menstrual cycle regulation, menopausal symptoms, regulating hormones, and any other gynecological complaint.
The Chinese
The Chinese use dong quai as a strengthening treatment for the heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women. It is an excellent antispasmodic and vasodilatory. It also contains vitamins E, A, and B12. Ligustilide is the essential oil found in Dong Quai.
Its antispasmodic properties are why it makes such a great choice for menstrual cramps. Research has also shown that it has a balancing effect on estrogen activity. Modern day practitioners prescribe dong quai for pms and to regulate menses after using birth control pills.
Its active constituents also stimulate the central nervous system which helps with headache and weakness associated with menses. It also strengthens the reproductive organs, and it can even help with endometriosis.
